Homemade Iced Tea: 5 Easy Summer Recipes to Try at Home

35°C outside. You open the fridge. Water, orange juice, fizzy drinks... Nothing appeals. What if the best drink of the summer was one you made yourself — in 5 minutes, with a tea bag and a handful of ice?

Homemade iced tea means zero added sugar, incredible flavours, and surprising simplicity. Here are our 5 favourite recipes — tried, tested, and approved by the entire Teatower team.

The Express Method (5 Minutes)

This is the technique we use in our shops. Simple, quick, and consistently brilliant.

  1. Brew strong: 2× the usual amount in half the volume of water (e.g. 4g in 20cl instead of 2g in 25cl)
  2. Normal steeping time: Follow the recommended brewing time for your tea (2–3 min for green tea, 5–7 min for herbal infusions)
  3. Remove the leaves
  4. Pour directly over a large glass of ice — the thermal shock locks in the aromas and gives you a beautifully clear liquor
  5. Drink immediately

Tip: Make ice cubes from brewed tea the night before — that way, they won't dilute your drink as they melt.

Recipe 5 — Paradise (Lychee & Pineapple)

  • Base: Paradise — Lychee & Pineapple
  • Brewing: 100°C, 7 min, double dose
  • Bonus: Chunks of fresh pineapple and a dash of coconut syrup
  • The result: Pale, crystal-clear yellow, exotic fragrance, pure refreshment

The Cold Brew Method (For the Patient)

If you have the time (8–12 hours), cold brew produces a result that is even smoother and more aromatic than the express method:

  1. 4g of tea or herbal infusion in 50cl of cold water
  2. Leave in the fridge for 8–12 hours (overnight works perfectly)
  3. Strain in the morning
  4. Keeps for 48 hours in the fridge

Cold brew extracts the flavour without the tannins → ultra-smooth, zero bitterness, even with green tea.

How Does the Cost Compare to Shop-Bought Drinks?

Drink Price/litre Sugar Additives
Coca-Cola ~€1.50 106g/L Yes
Fuze Tea ~€2.00 46g/L Yes
Lipton Ice Tea ~€1.80 56g/L Yes
Teatower Iced Tea ~€0.80 0g No

A 100g pack of Teatower tea makes around 50 cups. Brewed as iced tea (double dose), that's 25 litres of homemade iced tea for around €10. Just €0.40 a glass. Unbeatable.

Trevor's Take

"Iced tea is the gateway drink for people who think they don't like tea. Start with a chilled fruit infusion — Passion Mango or Grandma's Basket. No caffeine, no bitterness, just pure fruit. Whenever someone tells me 'I don't like tea', I hand them a glass of this. The conversation changes straight away."
